This role will primarily acquire for the Tor Books imprint, with additional opportunities to acquire and work across all TDA imprints, including Forge, Tor Teen, Starscape, Nightfire, and Tordotcom Publishing. I will be blogging about my project again before the end of my intern period.Tom Doherty Associates is looking to hire a executive editor to publish fantasy and science fiction. I hope to utilize my travel stipend in a visit to Rome next year for the Tor meet-up. This being only the first month with Tor, I look forward to more learning and meeting a lot more great people. My mentor told me on day one that there is always room for making mistakes here, as long as you are able to learn and correct them. My experience so far has been amazing and I have found the open source community to be a very warm and friendly one. I have dedicated the past few weeks to working on my project and have had more meetings with my mentors in the process. It was heartening to receive responses from people around the world who recognised my Institute and recollected fond memories from time spent at one or the other IITs. She also sent out a mail thread welcoming me into the community, along with my brief bio. The internship officially began on 5th Dec’17, but my mentor arranged a call with me a week before to lay out my intern tasks better.

The results were announced on 29 Nov and I was one of the 42 interns selected worldwide. I kept in touch with the mentors and program coordinator even after the application deadline. While filling out the application form, I made sure to properly list my contributions and clearly identify my goals for the three months of my internship. Apart from that, I tried to make small contributions to some existing tickets on the UX team. I spent time trying to learn about the Tor community and completed the sample assignments listed on the information page.

Most participating open source communities will have a dedicated page or thread for aspiring Outreachy interns, where you can find all the information you need to get started. But generally speaking, it is important that you make contact with the assigned mentors and seek their advice before beginning to contribute. The Application Periodĭepending on the organisation you are aiming for and the role you will be playing, the activities you need to take up during the application period may vary. Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. They were looking for a user advocate to help them find and tackle user issues and with my experience in UX design, I felt I would be a good fit. In my case, the open source community I chose to apply for was the Tor Project. Similar to Google Summer of Code, interns work remotely with mentors from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities on projects ranging from programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science. The sponsors and promoters include the likes of Google, Mozilla and Intel.

Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. The Outreachy program runs twice a year and provides three-month internships for people from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech. I have previously worked with Mozilla as a contributor to their open design, but other than that, I was completely new to open source. November 2017 was indeed an exciting month for me, but getting selected for Outreachy December’17 round was by far the best thing that happened.
